The Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers – University of the Cordilleras Student Chapter (PICE-UCSC) held an engaging Bridge and Tower Building Competition on April 6, 2024, emphasizing sustainable engineering practices and innovative problem-solving. The event encouraged students to construct small-scale bridge and tower models using only BBQ sticks and rubber bands, simulating real-world constraints on materials and costs.
The competition challenged participants to build resilient structures with a strong strength-to-weight ratio, a principle increasingly relevant in sustainable construction. Team “Jhay Ayan Mi” claimed victory in the Bridge category, excelling in strength and efficiency, while Team “Mocs” triumphed in the Tower category, demonstrating remarkable resilience and creativity in their design.
The event highlighted Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11), focusing on sustainable infrastructure. By promoting efficient resource use and environmental responsibility, the competition fostered students’ awareness of sustainable urban development and prepared future engineers to address the challenges of urban growth and resource scarcity.
This hands-on competition showcased the creativity, teamwork, and technical skills of tomorrow’s civil engineers, reinforcing the importance of sustainable practices in modern construction.
