UC Fosters Environmental Awareness Through Hands-On Learning on Water Management

On November 6, 2024, 40 Grade 11 STEM Innovation students, accompanied by their Earth Science teacher, Ms. Jamaica F. Tamayo, visited the University of the Cordilleras’ Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) as part of the Innovation Program curriculum enhancement. UC maximized this water management educational opportunity by giving students firsthand exposure to UC’s wastewater treatment system. STP staff guided them through the primary, secondary, and tertiary stages of treatment, illustrating how UC efficiently manages water resources, minimizes pollution, and safeguards local ecosystems. This immersive experience allowed learners to bridge theoretical lessons with real-world applications, empowering them to better understand the importance of sustainable water practices and inspiring them to advocate for environmental responsibility.

This initiative directly supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By promoting awareness of SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, the activity highlights the importance of water conservation and safe wastewater management. It also advances SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production by demonstrating how recycled water and efficient waste-processing systems reduce environmental impact. Additionally, the experience nurtures environmentally conscious learners who can contribute to SDG 13: Climate Action, fostering a generation equipped to address climate-related challenges through sustainable practices.

Looking ahead, UC with their Campus Management Office remains committed to expanding its water management educational opportunities not only for its students but also for the surrounding community. Through continued facility tours, outreach programs, and sustainability-driven initiatives, UC aims to strengthen public awareness on responsible water use and environmental protection, fostering a broader culture of stewardship across both the campus and the community it serves.
