Empowering Communities Through Technology: UC Computer Engineering Students Revamp Fort Del Pilar NHS Computer Lab

by Karen Allen Suarez, CCpE

Highlighting the role of engineering in social development, members of the Institute of Computer Engineering of the Philippines – Student Edition UC Chapter (ICPEP.se UC), headed by the society’s adviser, Denmel Paul Saavedra, recently completed a community outreach project at Fort Del Pilar National High School (FDPNHS) on June 11, 2025 by providing computer laboratory rooms a much-needed makeover utilizing the students’ skills and competencies in computer networking and electronics.

Before the intervention, the FDPNHS computer lab space was cluttered with tangled cables, outdated and malfunctioning equipment, and inefficient layout that made it difficult for students and teachers to fully utilize the resources available. The room requires more than just a touch-up—it requires a complete transformation.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the UC students rolled up their sleeves and put their skills to work. Under the guidance of their adviser Engr. Saavedra, the team launched a Community Extension Project as part of their Brigada Eskwela involvement, focusing on safety, organization, and usability. The project involved a series of thoughtful, hands-on activities aimed at transforming the computer laboratory into a safer and more efficient learning environment.

Through this impactful initiative, Computer Engineering students are not just giving back—they are driving sustainable development by aligning their community outreach efforts with key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through projects like Brigada Eskwela, where they upgrade school computer laboratories, repair equipment, manage cables, and install essential software, these students directly support SDG 4: Quality Education by creating safer and more conducive learning environments. Their technical interventions also promote SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, demonstrating how engineering skills can enhance educational infrastructure in underserved communities. Additionally, the collaborative nature of these projects reflects SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, as students, schools, and local stakeholders work together to drive positive change—proving that even small, skill-based contributions can have a lasting impact on community development.

The computer lab at Fort Del Pilar National High School now stands as a testament to what can be achieved when education meets service. This project highlights how future engineers can play an active role in community development—proving that even simple, technical solutions can lead to lasting, meaningful change.

Through projects like this, UC Computer Engineering students are not only shaping their careers—they’re shaping their communities.
