Engineering Faculty Joins Post-Earthquake Structural Inspection with CBAO

Following the magnitude 4.4 earthquake that struck La Union on Thursday, October 9, 2025, faculty members Engr. Nelson Notarte and Engr. Brian Guzman, from the College of Engineering participated in a post-earthquake structural inspection in coordination with the City Building and Architecture Office (CBAO) – Baguio City. The team assessed UC structures to ensure public safety and evaluate any potential structural impacts resulting from the tremors. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake occurred at 10:30 a.m. with its epicenter located three kilometers north 78° east of Pugo, La Union. The quake was felt at Intensity V in Baguio City.

The participation of engineering faculty in inspection efforts highlights the University’s strong alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). By applying engineering expertise to promote community safety, disaster resilience, and recovery, the university demonstrates its commitment to building sustainable, resilient communities and preparing professionals who actively contribute to environmental and societal well-being.
